Have you had those days when the only thing you want to do is stay in bed, reading a book and enjoying a cup of tea? Days when you don’t feel like talking to anyone and rather prefer to shut out from the world? I know I have those and you probably have experienced similar feelings at one time or another. Even though sometimes we can allow ourselves the luxury to give in to those feelings, more often than not this is practically impossible. Not only do we have to get up, but we also have to tackle all those tasks and challenges that lie ahead in our day, the very thought of which makes us feel even worse. We have to make breakfast, drive the kids to school, go to work, etc.
When we’ve woken on the wrong side of the bed, all those otherwise regular things can turn into overwhelming activities which can also result into issues with our loved ones or our colleagues; issues that we will later regret. That’s why we need to be aware of how we feel and to make everything possible to overcome our bad mood whenever it occurs.
Fortunately, there’re numerous easy ways to do that. The difficult part is to force ourselves into doing them. I know how difficult it can be to persuade yourself to try to find a way to turn your bad day into a good one. Trust me, I know! Has it happened to you to avoid doing something even though deep down inside you know that it will help you feel better? If you’re anything like me, the answer will most probably be “yes, a lot!”
Below I’ve listed 11 easy ways to get out of a bad mood and, please, give them a try as many times as you can. Most of them can even be used to prevent negative feelings before they have even occurred.
11 Easy Ways to Get Out of a Bad Mood
Morning words for the day
We can set ourselves for a great day right after waking up. I like using a short phrase to describe the day I anticipate and want to have. It doesn’t have to be complicated. You can say it aloud or to yourself, but make sure you do it. I start my day with something like “Today will be a wonderful and successful day!” or “Today we will enjoy our time together and will spread joy to the world.” It’s fascinating how strong our minds are and how just the way we think about things can determine our whole future.
Listen to a favorite song
Music is another powerful tool that we can easily use. Music has the power to inspire and motivate us, to make us shop, to give grace, to allow us to reflect on our life and most certainly – the power to make us feel good. So use it! Create a playlist with your favorite songs (preferably some cheerful ones) and turn them on when you start feeling the blues creeping in. You can also force yourself to start singing along (the louder, the better!) for even more splendid results;)
A piece of chocolate
We all know how well chocolate affects our happiness hormones:) If you can allow yourself a piece of chocolate – great; if not – just eat all of it. Never mind 🙂
A tasty meal
No, not chocolate again! Real food! A delicious meal is usually all I need in order to start feeling better right away:) I think that’s one of the main reasons people love to eat out even when they have the time to prepare something at home. It improves their mood! (Especially knowing that you don’t have to do the dishes afterwards)
Talk to a friend
We miss face-to-face communication so much today! We rely on Internet and social media to fill the gap of having real communication. But it’s not the same! Make the time and arrange a date with a friend. Real life communication allows us to exchange energy that will otherwise remain behind the screen. You will probably have forgotten all about your bad mood by the end of your date.
If you can’t go for a walk right away, consider opening the window to allow some fresh air inside. It will make you feel much better and will help you concentrate on what you’ve got to do.
Time for a work out session!:) That bad mood will evaporate in the very first thirty Jumping Jacks that you make;)
Do something nice for someone else
Being in a bad mood, doesn’t mean we’re not human (even though it might feel this way sometimes). Do something nice for someone no matter how small or big it is. This will allow you to shift your attention from whatever’s bothering you and invest it into something good. Even if you don’t feel like doing it, you will realize it has been all worth it after seeing how thankful and happy that someone is.
Make a list with all the things you’re grateful for today. Even on our worst days, there’s always a bunch of things that we should be thankful for. List as many as you can. Focus your attention on each thing on your list and allow the feeling of gratitude wash away your sore thoughts.
Plan a vacation
Even if you don’t know at what time exactly it will be. Choose a destination and start researching everything that you would like to see and experience there.
It will pass
Whenever I feel irritated or hurt by something, I just remind myself that it too shall pass. We probably wouldn’t even remember those things in 1, 5 or 25 years. Instead we should focus our attention and invest our time into those few things that will mean a lot to us even after all those years have passed.
I hope that some of those 11 ideas will prove themselves useful the next time you have to deal with a bad day. We should never forget that we’re the only ones responsible for the way we feel. The good thing is that there’s always a way to feel better. We just have to reach out to it.
