Do you struggle to find time to clean up your home? Me too. Even though I love cleaning, it can get quite overwhelming sometimes. Especially when it builds up. I also hate to miss time with my loved ones because of chores. That’s why I try to do my cleaning tasks during the week, so that on weekends we can have a pleasant time together and a clean home to relax in.
Today I decided to share with you my weekly cleaning schedule that has kept our home a pleasant place in the last couple of months.
With a toddler and bad weather outside, if I don’t set a strict cleaning routine, I might as well spend the whole day running around accomplishing nothing. So this schedule keeps me organized enough to at least manage my home. It’s quite simple and it’s focused only on the major chores, leaving the details for whenever I have extra time. I actually do details (like cleaning the stove, sink, etc.) whenever I have a 5-10 minute gap during the day.
So, here’s what my major-chores-schedule looks like:
Vacuuming – Monday, Wednesday, Friday
I usually vacuum in the morning. That’s when my son is most patient and it doesn’t hurt him so much to spend some time alone in his cot. Afterwards I allow him to play for a while with the vacuum cleaner as a reward. (He LOVES it!)
Mopping – Monday, Friday
I tried mopping the floor after each time I vacuum but that didn’t work. It took too much time and Alex was getting very impatient and upset. It just wasn’t worth it. I noticed that if I vacuum every other day, mopping two times per week is quite enough. I usually do that during Alex’s nap time.
Dusting – Tuesday, Thursday
Dusting is probably the easiest and most flexible task since I can do it even when the kid is awake and running around. However, it is also the most frequently neglected task. I don’t know why…
Cleaning the bathroom – Tuesday
Cleaning the bathroom is the one thing which if I don’t plan, I might never do. It requires so much work and energy, that I keep procrastinating it. That’s why I’ve scheduled that one for Tuesday, when there’s no vacuuming and mopping to do. Sometimes I don’t manage to do the whole bathroom in one day. In that case I just finish it on Thursday.
Laundry – Monday, Wednesday, Friday
We usually do laundry two times per week (Monday and Friday). During the autumn and winter months, however, I run an additional laundry on Wednesday. It usually consists of bed sheets that didn’t fit in with the other clothes.
Ironing – Tuesday, Thursday
I’m one of those strange people that still iron the clothes before placing them in the wardrobe. I do that in the evening after Alex has gone to bed. He has an addiction to cables and contact plugs which makes it impossible for me to iron while he’s running around. Well, I can always put him in his cot, but he hates that and I already do it when vacuuming, so I decided that it’s much easier and stress-free to just iron in the evening.
And that’s it. I keep it simple in order to be able to cross everything off the list at the end of the day. At some point in the future I plan to create a more detailed cleaning schedule, but for now this works beautifully.
